[WinMac] Getting printer status messages

We have a small network of Macs and PCs with an NT4 SP3 server with two
laser printers (HP 4MV and Tektronix Phaser 380) all connected via
Ethernet. There are print queues set up on the server so that the Mac users
see a blue spool next to the printer name in the Chooser, and background
printing is turned off. Everything works fine, except that after a job has
finished spooling, the Macs can't receive any error messages from the
printers (out of paper, jam, etc). Is there a better way to implement
spooling or some way for the printers to communicate with the Macs? Thanks
in advance for any advice!
