Dear David,

the German software company Application Systems Heidelberg (ASH, in
Atari business since 1987) offers a professional ATARI emulator _both_
for Mac and PC: Magic Mac 6.0.1 and Magic PC 6.0 (demo for download at
http://ash.sww.net).

These programs provide the same user surface as an ATARI running Magic
6.0, which is a stable and fast preemptive multitasking OS for all 68k
Ataris. Hence any Atari program that has been correctly written
according to TOS instructions and does not use direct "illegal" access
to specific hardware features of the computer, will run under Magic on
all 3 platforms identically.

I have used MagicMac now for 3 years in parallel to Atari TT and ST
computers. It works stable and really _very_ fast on a Mac PPC 7500 with
604e/166CPU and is reported even faster on G3 Macs.

Magic Mac 6.0.1 is compatible with MacOS 8.1 (own experience) and with
HFS-Plus (not yet tested myself). E.g. the text processing software
Signum 4.4 (also made by ASH), which typesets latin, greek, kyrillic,
hebreic, arabic (from right to left), hungul (from Thailand) and
possibly some more languages, runs subjectively judged about 3-4 times
faster on my Mac´s screen display than Word98.

Using Magic for Atari, Magic Mac or Magic PC, installation of NVDI 5
(distributed by ASH) is strongly recommended. NVDI is a kind of
TOS-plugin that dramatically accelerates graphic output on screen and in
print.

Good success!
Wolfram
