[WinMac] Mangled Mac Files

I'm inexperienced in the complexities of networking and have become
mired in something that should be straightforward (at least it seems as
if it should be).
I have a cable modem connected to a PC (Win 95) via a NIC. I want to be
able to download .sit and .hqx files to use on my Mac (PPC OS 8.1).
The first thing I did was to use PC MacLan to connect the Mac and PC via
ethernet and get them communicating. I can transfer files either
direction.
When I download a file with a .hqx or .sit file extension and transfer
the file to the Mac, it is usually damaged and can't be used. I am using
Stuffit Deluxe to do the decompressing of the files. Sometimes the files
will expand out, and sometimes they won't, but almost all are damaged.
I assumed (I know, I know....) that it must have something to do with
the Mac files containing a resource and data fork that the PC was
mishandling.
So, I figured that the Mac files needed to downloaded directly to the
Mac, which I would navigate to via the save file dialog during the
download process. Still no joy.
Next I configured the PC as a IP proxy server to access the web directly
from the Mac. I can download files from the Mac's browser, but they
still expand out as damaged files.
Am I anywhere near to a solution or should I look for some light in
another tunnel?
