Further to the metrics discussion

Obviously even books don't agree:

On page 300 of the Fontographer manual, it says (in reference to kerning),
"choose Import from the File menu and then select its submenu Metrics to
import the kerning pairs from the original font's AFM or PFM file or bitmap
file."

contain some font metrics.

On Page 4 of the Adobe Type Manager Deluxe manual it states "A bitmap file
contains spacing information and specific font sizes designed for on screen
display only."

On Page 7-32 of FontStudio, it states "The Adobe Font Metric file stores
information (em size, character width, kerning pairs) similiar to the
information stored in the FOND bitmap and TrueType fonts. This is also
echoed on P176 of the Fontographer manual which states that "the FOND
resource, still required, contains spacing, kerning, naming and metrics
information."

Even the Mac Plus and the 512k enhanced Mac could use this information set
up the FOND instead of individual widths set in the font.

Bye for now,
