Would you be better off using an actual "inch" symbol, from the
respective symbol fonts on each platform? A quote mark suffices
when no proper symbol is available, but both platforms do have
common symbol fonts that, I believe, include the proper characters.
(But, can you access characters outside the standard text encoding
with a call to such a font?)
