Is this possibly a case of needing to file messages from the server to an
off-line mailbox?
I know with Outlook for Exchange client I have to create my own personal
off-line folders in order to remove messages from the server. Once the
off-line folder is created, I drag the message to the appropriate box. For
example, I have a folder set up to file all the Win-Mac digests I receive.
You could probably set up a filter to do it automatically too.

of several hundred messages dating back to April. Our IT staff will not
support Macs and will not load Mac-specific software on the NT server(s).
Does anyone recognise the problem? Is there anything I can do at the
client end to ameliorate it?

Just a brief "me too" on this one.
As someone who has to deal with multiple mail accounts and hundreds of
mail items a day (from multiple locations <sigh>), Communicator 4.6
handles it all very nicely (especially filtering).
... oh yeah... and you can't go wrong at the price!

You may not need to change to different client software. It also doesn't
matter if there is Mac specific support on the NT server. There are many
email servers out there, quite a few of which run on NT. What counts in this
instance is the protocol you're using to connect to the server. It sounds to
me like you're connecting using POP3, which is a TCP/IP (Internet) standard,
not an NT specific protocol.
If you are using POP3 to connect to the server, you can use the preferences
for Claris Emailer to solve the problem. In the Emailer preferences for your
account, look for the option to leave a copy of messages on the server.
Remove the checkmark next to that option. If I recall correctly, you may
also specify a time frame for leaving a copy of the message(s) on the
server. Note that it has been more than a year since I used Emailer, so I
don't know the exact location in the Emailer prefs to change this, only that
it does exist.
As an aside, this is one of the differences between POP3 and IMAPv4. IMAP
will only download a copy of the headers of a message when you initially
connect. Then IMAP will download the entire message only if you select the
message based on it's header info, usually the subject line. With POP3, you
get the entire message as soon as you connect to the server. IMAP will leave
the message on the server unless you choose to delete it from the server.
POP3 will *normally* remove the message from the server once it has been
downloaded to the client. In many modern (and some older) POP3 email clients
there is an option to leave a copy of the message on the server. Note that
this doesn't prevent the entire message from downloading to the client, only
that it leaves a copy on the server for later retrieval.

The harddisk in my Performa 6320 died and now I'm looking for a new one. It
is an IDE drive which can be bought quite cheaply for a PC. For a Mac
however, they seem to be hard to find and/or expensive.
Can I just put any IDE drive in the Performa? Do I need any special
software for it?

this very mac right here has a non-apple drive in it. ( 18 gigs
worth!) any IDE drive will do.
1) remove old drive after backing up
2) CHECK JUMPER SETTINGS CAREFULLY- SET TO PRIMARY MASTER
3) attatch cables and boot w/ restore/system CD in drive, holding 'C'
key till boots
4)run drive setup utility on new drive
5) install mac os
6) REBOOT- you're done!

In general, any PIO Mode 4 ATAPI (or higher, meaning UDMA) hard drive
should work, However, two not-so-insignificant problems are the mounting
dimensions, as some drives are longer than others; as well as the heat
dissipated - And on the Quadra 630 - Performa 62xx & 63xx series this can
spell trouble due to the tight quarters and poor ventilation and the hard
drive sits in.
If you have a power supply (either a PC supply or a supply in
an external
drive case), power up the hard drive for a few hours to see how hot it runs
before installing it in the case.

Not quite true: Any old IDE drive will NOT do: IDE and EIDE drives will
NOT work: The drive (for the 630 & 6300 series) must support (at least)
support ATAPI.
I *think* G3 machines need UDMA support as well; but don't quote me on
that. Without UDMA support in both the controller *and* drive, CPU
utilization will "peg out" at 100% during disk access' - With the MacOS,
and *especially NT* this can be devastating.
Most likely, your new 18 gig drive supports UDMA (although=20
your controller
might not); and most definitely your 18 gig drive supports ATAPI.

I am the lone (and brand new) Mac person in an all Wintel academic
department. The building/department is ethernet wired for Internet
access but computer services runs a NetWare server for file servers
and printing.
I have got onto the Internet via the ethernet network, but cannot
print on the department's printer. Computer services says the printer
-- a Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 5Si -- would have to be configured for
AppleTalk, which it isn't currently, and the configuration is
unstable. I wouldn't know. But their response strikes me as odd: two
floors up from me (in another department) is an HP 4000N that is
AppleTalked. I can select this (and plenty of other printers around
the university) from my Chooser, and could print if the other
Department would let me (why would they?).
So my question is twofold, what has to be done to get me to where I
can print on this printer, and how do I convince CS to do what has to
be done?
I'm guessing that there are two options -- AppleTalking the printer
or NetWaring my Macintosh (it's a bronze PB G3 running OS 8.6) -- but
I don't know for sure. Is configuring the HP for AppleTalk terribly
complicated, and/or terribly unstable?

Jeff,
The short answer is...it depends. While monitoring *keyed*
programs works fine, it's the unkeyed stuff that gets you.
Some programs are more difficult to key than others; we're
still trying to figure out how to do it for Exceed and
haven't been able to. As a result, tracking our Exceed usage
(to determine if we really need X copies) is hard.

Dear List,
I have just bought a VCam USB digital camera (very similar to Quickcam) in
a nice blue and white scheme to find that it does not have any Mac drivers.
I have tried the manufacturers in the Far East to no avail (they are just
surprised that I was able to buy one in the UK).
Does anyone on the list have any suggestions, save selling the camera on to
a PC user.
