I have two non-standard printers on my network of PCs and Macs. One is
shared through a workstation, but it can only be seen by the PCs (it is
hooked up to a PC workstation. The other is shared through an HP Jet Direct
adapter which is connected to the printer with a parallel cable. The box
has an IP address associated with it and it has Appletalk loaded. The older
macs can see it with Appletalk. The newer macs see it using IP. The HP box
cost us $179.00 Cdn and works very well. Any of the older printers can be
connected to it, as long as they have either a parallel port ar a local talk
    port.
